It’s still not an intense situation. In a full rendering setup, that’s normal. Both the 8700k and the 2700x will heat up significantly when running at maximum load, regardless of cooling methods. The key is you’re overestimating the demand. OP isn’t running everything continuously; he’s doing light video editing, which suggests occasional use. I think he’s mainly focused on gaming or similar tasks that don’t require heavy processing. A non-delidded 8700k, a standard 8700k, and a 2700x—none of them will cause overheating with proper cooling. That’s why I’m calling your comments exaggerated. Compared to a well-delidded 8700k and a 2700x, the 8700k will perform better in this scenario and stay quiet as long as cooling works. During gaming, his GPU should easily mask the noise from either of these CPUs.

Our 2700X stays under 63*C—about 20*C cooler than the delidded 8700K, and it runs at the same temperature. The 8700K has its fan running hard. Interpret what you want.

Intel's specifications are also impressive and built for that purpose. Most of the time, when we're playing games, GPU cooling fans will still struggle to keep up with the case fans. Even with my 8700k running at full speed, the CPU cooler isn't dominating the airflow.

For this reason I advised him to use a 3600 instead of spending time on worn or damaged components; paired with cooling and board, he'll end up costing more later.

That's a valid observation, though he didn't seem receptive. I'd bypass both and aim for a 3700x, though that's just my perspective.
