Hey there, I'm trying to figure this out. I'm in the UK with BT broadband via VDSL, using their modem/router. It's a locked-down plastic unit, and I wanted more features, so I switched to an ASUS RT-AX86U. This isn't a DSL modem—it's just a router. I've connected it between my phone line and the ASUS in bridge mode, but I'm worried about compatibility. My broadband uses PPPoA, while the ASUS only supports PPPoE. Is this going to work? I'm sure the Draytek Vigor 130 will act as a bridge, but do I need another router? ISPs can be really frustrating to deal with.

You could have skipped the hassle by keeping the ISP’s equipment and installed your own ASUS router instead.

I don’t think it’s possible to switch the ISP router into bridge mode, and the VPN settings seem confusing. If you really want to secure your connection, consider buying a dedicated VPN router instead of trying to set up the VPN on the existing device. It might be frustrating right now, but it could save you money in the long run.

Contact BT's technical support for assistance. They offer the Draytek Vigor 130 through their website; if unavailable, they'll provide alternatives.

Incorrect assumption made. BT VDSL uses PPPoE, not BT. ADSL previously supported PPPoA, and even in bridge mode, it functioned unofficially with PPPoE. Check the details for accuracy.

I don't intend that. What I'm referring to is keeping it in full router mode and then inserting your own router afterward.

This configuration is quite poor, resulting in dual-NAT while relying heavily on the main routers' speed and stability.

I believe the ISP router works well, but you're looking for greater management of your own network.
