I have four 4 GB DDR3 modules on both desktops. I’m thinking about increasing to 24 GB total. Could combining two 4 GB and two 8 GB sticks work smoothly? Or should I wait for a larger package of 8 GB sticks? I’m using Oracle VirtualBox on an I7-3770 and want to enhance the virtual machine performance.

You haven't faced any problems when combining memory modules, just ensure they match in speed and timing, and it should work smoothly.
