I'm setting up a new computer for my grandpa since his old drive failed and the system was slow. I'm curious about whether using his existing Windows product key can help me save money or if I need to purchase a new license altogether.

It's either that or reach out to Microsoft for assistance.

I've applied my Windows 7 product key five times in total. It functioned consistently each time. Using two distinct motherboards also worked successfully.

That's great! You're keeping one for future use after receiving it from someone who gave it to you.

You can either use Microsoft support or contact them directly. If the key is an OEM version, using it on another computer isn't allowed—though it will function properly, it's not permitted.

Function should operate successfully but only on a single machine at once.
