Utilizing just 8 lanes on a 3.0 x 16 architecture
I just discovered my GPU is only utilizing 8 lanes instead of the full 16 via the Radeon software. Someone suggested it’s fine because I have a M.2 drive, but shouldn’t my PC have more available lanes for the GPU to use? My setup: Ryzen 5 3600 DDR4 16GB, M.2 500GB (mounted on a M.2, 3.0 x4), RX 7600 8GB (mounted on a 3.0 x16), B450 Tomahawk Max.
You're using a PCIe Gen4 x8 GPU, which means it can connect up to 8 lanes even if placed in an x16 port. It will operate at Gen3 x8 speeds on your system. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/ra...7600.c4153 This performance is due to PCIe's forward and backward compatibility, though it only provides half the bandwidth of a Gen4 slot (or a PCIe 3.0 x16 card). Your motherboard manual clarifies that the M.2 slot doesn't affect any PCIe connections.
It's just that my GPU is 4.0, and I thought it would still handle all 16 lanes. But maybe that was the reason for the crashes in Fortnite—I've made another post about it. I'll need to keep troubleshooting that issue. Thanks!
The issue stems from the GPU's limited configuration, as shown in the provided link.
