this problem has been going on for a while, I try to limit things that are running, like tabs, and windows, I currently have 1 window of chrome open with only this tab. Nothing else, and about 80% of my memory is being used. I have background processing off, but in the taskbar, chrome is using around 450MB of my memory and it says "Google Chrome(25)". why are there so many? Over 100 things are running in my taskbar, sometimes when I close a task, it just opens right back up. I have 4GB of ram. I have restarted my laptop too

Explore today’s computers. 4GB of RAM is just enough for Windows these days. RAM is quickly consumed by Chrome, so I’d suggest switching to Firefox if that’s what you have. You likely have several programs running in the background without realizing they’re installed. It might be time to clear your hard drive and reinstall Windows, upgrade the RAM if feasible, or think about installing Linux instead. An application like XFCE can provide low RAM usage while still offering a full graphical interface and a familiar feel compared to Windows.

You can find extensions in Chrome's task manager. Currently, 4GB is really insufficient for most needs.

Onboard video requires additional storage space. 8gb is currently the lowest recommended amount.

On an older laptop with 4GB RAM, similar results appear because modern programs consume much memory. Consider switching to Edge and using uBlock to improve performance—this has helped me. You might also try Linux or upgrade your RAM. At least 8GB is needed for a smooth experience, while 16GB is ideal.
