Hello, I understand your concern. You're considering using a Linux live CD to scan the old HDD for potential virus removal. This can be a good approach if you're unsure about the system's health or want to avoid modifying your main Windows files. Just make sure you have a clean copy of the CD and back up important data before proceeding.

Consider a solid plan, you can securely pull out the required files using a Linux live CD onto another storage. After that, you can wipe the compromised drive.

Sophos or ESET nod32 is just a test version, but it's okay if you only need it once.

Thanks for the input! If you store files on a pendrive, it should help protect against infections. Since most of your files are music and photos, that’s a good setup. Regarding Sophos—don’t worry, it’s a well-known security brand.

https://support.eset.com/en/kb2708-downl...orkstation that's a basic how to, only thing is I've never ran it live. so not 100% sure that you can get it to work on live, I've only done installation for use, above my knowledge unfortunately. and not sure on sophos, never used it, but it is an antivirus that is rated pretty well for linux. the one you suggested, clamav would also likely work fine

I think I'll give nod32 a shot, it's been praised a lot. If it fails in real life, I'll switch to another option or install Linux straight on that machine. It's my last resort. I'd like to scan the entire drive just to feel more secure.

View it as a biological virus. It won't affect a host it wasn't designed for. A Linux distribution can't execute a Microsoft Windows process. You're secure copying multimedia files and documents to a pendrive, then formatting the compromised drive just in case.

I see, perhaps I should try that now. Scanning the live CD was slow, but thanks for the help!
