I need to figure out what to do with the old laptop running Windows XP. It’s not supported anymore and may be risky due to security threats. Since it’s meant for simple tasks like emails, videos, and shopping, upgrading to Windows 7 or 8 doesn’t seem necessary given its age.

It varies based on how you use it. My cousin keeps Windows XP on his gaming rig and hasn’t faced any issues so far. I’ve also noticed many machines running older operating systems still function properly.

It had many vulnerabilities despite being maintained, and only limited fixes were possible. I’d consider switching to Ubuntu or Mint.

I understand you're new to Linux but open to learning. For quick and easy use, I suggest a lightweight option. With 3GB of RAM available, a minimal distribution like LiteLinux or a simple Debian version would work well. It keeps things stable and easy for your grandparents to manage.

Mint resembles Windows quite a bit. A weak device isn’t necessarily a big problem even if it belongs to older users. If a virus appears, it’s mainly about protecting data rather than causing major harm. Sensitive info on the machine or network matters less unless there’s anything valuable at risk. As long as you manage things carefully, it shouldn’t cause too much trouble.

It's not advisable to rely on Windows. Even older versions like XP aren't ideal.

Be mindful while browsing and setting up antivirus software; however, if your system has a dual-core processor, consider using Windows 7 for better performance.

The final support for XP is coming, so I’ll need to switch to 7/8/9 soon.

Ubuntu offers a refined feel compared to Mint, featuring a pleasant interface and LibreOffice included by default. It’s just a touch more ready to use out of the box.
