I'm planning a fresh setup of Windows 10 on an older machine that originally booted from a USB with the media creation tool. The system is currently running Windows 10 Home, activated via a digital license from when I upgraded from Windows 8, and tied to a Microsoft account. I'm curious whether I can choose to install Windows 10 Pro during the USB boot and activate it using the Microsoft account, or if I need to switch to Windows 10 Home first. I've managed to install Windows 10 Pro successfully on another machine with a similar setup, but I'm unsure if this approach works for moving from Home to Pro.

You can install pro and decide to add the key later. If it works, you can delete the activation and insert a new key.

Install the Windows Media Creation Tool and choose Windows 10, with both Home and Pro versions available. Upon booting the USB, you can pick Windows 10 Pro from the menu options. The issue lies in licensing; your Home license is for Windows 10 Home only, so activating the Pro version requires entering a license key for Windows 10 Pro. You cannot switch from Home to Pro using the same license.
