I have an x4 860k and it's starting to feel outdated. I'm thinking about whether to overclock it with its built-in cooler or if I should consider an aftermarket upgrade. I'm using an MSI A68HI AC mini ITX FM2+ board right now.

Without an OC cooler or your processor might get damaged.
You can choose Raijintek Aidos or Deepcool Gammaxx 400 (around 30USD) which work well with medium OCs (up to 4.2GHz, which may be higher for your model).
If you have more funds, consider liquid cooling for high OCs (up to 4.6GHz or above).
