Using an NVMe drive inside an external sleeve causes Windows Explorer to behave erratically.
I just bough a NMVe SSD and a enclosure so I can use it as a backup device for my photography files. The drive: Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD 1TB M.2 2280-SNV3S/1000G The case is the Beikel M2 enclosure you can find in amazon https://amzn.eu/d/09eT1En I'm in windows 11 in a 1 year old LOQ 15irh8 laptop The problem I'm having is that every time I connect the drive with USB C. Windows explorer behaves weirdly: If I try to open a large file, it takes for ever to open. Some times it just doesn't open and windows explorer just crashes. If I copy a large file (like a 8GB mp4 file) from another external HDD drive or the laptop itself the following happens: The copy process halts. If I try to acces the NMVe folder while it is "copying", windows explorer window crashes. If I try to "safe extract the file", the dropdown menu that shows the drives that you have conected doesnt appear, I click the "thumbstick" logo, but nothing happens. If a force restart the windows explorer process trough task manager, the task bar disappears and doesn't come back. When I hard disconnect the USB cable (unplugging it). Everything comes backs to mormal. When I connect the nvme again sometimes the files are lost (even though the 170GB space is used) If the files are not gone, the same behaviour persists. Other things I tried: Restarting everything Delete the volume, format the drive again, both exFAT and NTBS(or whatever) Same issues. I tried to run crystaldiskmark. But the test never starts. Removing the metal case to let the drive "breathe" I noticed that the drive chip becomes very hot. But I don't understand if it is an issue, since it would be running in the same conditions as if it was installed in a PC motherboad. I didn't try yet to install it in the laptop MB but it won't be a solution since I want it as a external drive. Thanks in advance for the help.
The enclosure or drive appears to be faulty. These issues clearly indicate a problem with the hardware.
Thank you for the clarification. I'll attempt to link to the laptop's MB and check if the issue persists.
