Using a hard restart during demanding games: EVGA RTX 3080 10GB, Corsair RM850, MSI Z690 Pro-A, Intel 12600K
Hi everyone,
Over the past couple of years I've faced problems in games like Helldivers 2 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Sometimes, mid-game my PC crashes and restarts itself, losing power before it can fully reboot. My setup includes an RTX 3080, a 12600K motherboard with an MSI Z690 Pro-A, and Corsair RM850. I've run stress tests on the PSU using Prime95 and Furmark, and it seems to perform well, so it's likely the power supply is struggling with sudden spikes and protection features. The PSU was bought on November 30, 2019, which is about six years ago. I also tested it with an RTX 2070 Super, but results were similar.
I'm wondering if this issue might be related to something other than the motherboard—like a problem with the PSU itself? Thanks for your help, Tim.
Check the current temperatures of your CPU and GPU when idle and under load.
GPU performance in COD MW2 reaches around 82c/83c, while the CPU in the game runs at about 55c. Under stress tests it climbs to 70c-80c. I think both my GPU and AIO might need a refresh or cleaning now, but these temps don’t seem high enough to trigger problems. Just checked—83c is right at the GPU limit, which could mean thermal throttling, though I’m still seeing good Furmark and p95 scores without a hard reboot.
