Used RAM
Used RAM
The cost of RAM compared to a new kit depends on the type and quantity; DDR4 options are generally more affordable than premium kits.
RAM behaves similarly to other solid-state components—it either functions correctly or not at all. While age doesn’t ensure reliability, failure rates do tend to rise over time. I own some vintage DDR modules that still perform well, and I also found a newer DDR3 unit in a friend’s setup a few years back that stopped working. Why do older models last while newer ones fail? It’s uncertain. Used gear always carries uncertainty. There’s no guarantee it will work. The decision depends on weighing the benefits against the cost. You’re investing $80 and likely saving around $60 versus a new unit. In short, you might get 32GB for what feels like 16GB. If you can utilize the extra space or can’t afford it, this could be a worthwhile choice.
