It isn't true—the IPC doesn't cover first-gen Ryzen well, particularly in certain types of games. Playing an MMO makes a huge difference; night and day. The first-gen Ryzen is quite disappointing and was overhyped when it came out. I'm selling one now since I've removed it from my collection. The 8600 performs about as well as the 9400f, while the 1600 often lags behind in most games. To be honest, it's so poor that even the 4/4 i3 usually outperforms it.
Most MMOs focus on core performance, and the games that still offer good value are usually older titles. The biggest recent one I remember was Black Desert Online, while the top three newest are from around 2012—Guild Wars 2, which runs at variable FPS regardless of settings. For new AAA titles, a first-generation Ryzen is more stable than a 8600K in terms of consistent FPS and smoother gameplay, with no stutter. This comparison has been discussed on YouTube several times. I completely agree that upgrading to a second-generation Ryzen would make a big difference; the 1600A offers a noticeable improvement over the 8600K in every aspect.
Check out the video I made. The 1600 based on personal use isn’t something I’d suggest for gaming or anything that needs a single core. In my view, Ryzen didn’t really shine as a gaming choice until Zen 2 came along.
R7 1700 seems to offer improvements over R5 1600 AF. The standard 1600 AF likely has differences in performance compared to the higher-end R7 1700.
The 1700 model is the initial generation and may perform worse in most gaming situations compared to the 1600AF. It could offer benefits only if your workload demands more cores, but otherwise I recommend choosing the version with better performance per clock. The 1600AF is considered a lower-tier Ryzen 5 2600 binned option. I would strongly avoid first-generation Ryzen chips at all costs.
Tell me where you reside and your financial limits. Since 2021 the first and second generation Ryzen chips aren't worth it.
