I'm using a MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX LGA1700 board. My drives are a 1TB and a 2TB M.2 SSD, both at 4.0 GB/s. I was thinking of placing the 1TB in the first M.2 slot for my OS and programs. I found it hard to tell if the first slot is shared with a PCIe slot, but I didn't find clear info online. Maybe I should try putting the 1TB in bay 1 and the 2TB in bay 2 since I don’t plan to use the other two slots soon.

The PCI_E1 port is likely the most dependable option.

Page 16 of your motherboard guide indicates no issues between M.2 slots and PCIe slots. The only overlap occurs with a SATA type M.2 device and the SATA_1 port. Therefore, place your operating system drive in M2_1, and position other drives as desired.
