Windows 10 doesn’t automatically keep my drives organized weekly; I need to handle it each time I remember. I’d like to set up a custom scheduled task to make this easier, but I’m unsure about the exact steps or what should be triggered. Anyone have suggestions on how to approach this? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if you're targeting an SSD.

Don't stress, Windows handles it, it doesn't perform any defragmentation.

I looked into ways to reach your goal. Your concern about maintaining your drive comes up—after using three SSDs for more than two years with no issues, it’s worth understanding why regular cleanups matter.

I neglected it for a while and saw some sluggishness; cutting it back brought it back to its original pace. Weekly checks feel a bit obsessive, but once a month works too. I’m just being silly—I know!

Most people agree you'll see a noticeable slowdown once you start filling up the drive. I try to keep about 15% free space on each one. When I bought my two drives for the desktop, I planned ahead—250GB is more than enough for the OS and files on C:\. Then I allocated 500GB for games and software, a 2TB HDD for other media and less intensive tasks, and I’m considering a manual monthly cleanup to keep things efficient. I’ll look into options for that later.

The settings beneath the snippet indicate whether notifications are enabled for missed scheduled runs. Yes, there is an option to be alerted if three runs are not completed.

I have roughly 40% available, which is okay from my side. No verification done. Yet picture all of them being overlooked for a whole year, haha!

We focus on one day at a time. Unless you only scan your computer yearly, please confirm you want notifications. The trimming feature is usually active by default in Windows. Are you keeping your system current?

I turned it off initially because I wasn’t sure if Windows would try to defragment it. Eventually I realized it didn’t do that automatically and I re-enabled it, though it still hasn’t done it on its own. I don’t update very frequently.
