Gen 1 equals approximately 3.1 times Gen 1, which in turn is roughly 3.0 (with a few technical details about 8/10 versus 128/130 coding handled automatically).

It's not backward compatibility since everything functions identically... any device that fits a USB 3.0 19-pin connector will also fit a 3.2G1 19-pin connector.
