Use Skype on Windows 8.1 with a personal username instead of linking to a Microsoft account.
Hello everyone. I need a Skype account for playing on Steam but it keeps linking to my Microsoft account, which then uses my email as the username. I’d prefer a username that matches my regular one instead of an email address. Also, I want to use a desktop version, not the Windows 8 app. Any suggestions?
You're wondering why you can't just use a Steam account instead of setting up Skype manually. It's possible because Steam handles the integration, while Skype requires a separate installation.
Thanks for the link! You're asking about the Steam account issue. It seems when you sign up for Skype, it tries to connect using your existing email or creates a new Microsoft account. They use an email as the username, but I just want a name like MonkyBoy. It’s confusing, especially if you’re not sure how to explain it.
It seems Skype has switched entirely to email-based logins now. If you previously used an old Skype username, you could link it to a Microsoft account or keep it separate. Your login will use an email address, yet you retain the freedom to pick any display name. Others will view your chosen name instead of your original one.
Your display name is what others see and use in searches. Would you like to update it now?
I misstated that. This page allows you to register using any username you prefer (provided as a Skype handle): https://login.skype.com/account/signup-f....107%2F259 You can update your Skype display name after logging in—just go to Skype, select Profile, edit your profile, and click your name at the top to modify it.
That link worked great! I tried logging into my original account but couldn’t alter the Skype name, so I went ahead and set up a new one. No problem at all!
