Hi, over the last few months I've experienced extreme ping fluctuations which are really annoying. I'm currently on summer break and can't even enjoy gaming like CS-GO without my connection spiking between 50-150-500-1200-1600 that's typical. Even outside of games, I always feel laggy. I'm using Cat 5e since I don't think Cat 6 would make a difference, and changing DNS servers hasn't helped much. My ISP said everything was fine with my internet speed but ignored the reason I called—the sudden ping spikes. I usually get entertainment by playing games with friends and prefer staying at home. I'm confused about why my internet keeps jumping and hope the community can assist me. My WiFi actually performs better than my Ethernet, which is confusing. Best regards, Fadi Jarebica

It could be an issue at a peering point (Place where the ISP connects in to another network) or an issue with a back bone provider like Level 3. There is a chance Verizon doesnt have a direct connection to the game servers, so that traffic goes over to someone like Level 3 to get to where it needs to go. If thats the case there is nothing you can do. On a side note, it could be a Verizon issue, hope that it isnt, because they dont want to be a DSL provider any more and have chosen to let their copper infrastructure rot in many areas, or sell it off to other providers. What you can do is do a trace route in the cmd prompt to the game servers ip address and take note on areas that might have issues.

It seems the issue isn't severe for me, though others in my family experience more ping spikes—up to 80-100, which I’m okay with.

Do they offer the same games as yours? Also, what else is happening in your gaming world? Your DSL connection often struggles, which could be due to bandwidth problems. What service are you using? I notice many people with slow DSL facing gaming issues because someone else uses it for streaming, like Netflix.

No one else in my household plays games except maybe Roblox. The only service available nearby via Verizon is DSL with speeds between 7.1 and 15 Mbps. I’m using a GT784WNV from Actiontec. Right now, my younger sister is streaming on Mac and watching YouTube, while the other sister chats on Discord. It doesn’t seem to impact my ping much. When someone watches Netflix, everything stays the same. My mom isn’t changing plans because she believes Xfinity is a scam, even though prices are so low.

They’re a scam because once they lock you in, they twist you into doing something you don’t want. I’ve been with them for years. Their speeds are far superior to DSL. Your connection has poor bandwidth—Netflix HD requires around 5 Mbps, but yours is 7 to 15. That’s likely a bit low given the state of Verizon’s copper network. Using heavy bandwidth apps like Netflix or YouTube can cause problems.

Yes, there are websites that list home plans for Delran, NJ. You can check local real estate sites or specialized home plan databases.

Not entirely accurate but the site seems secure. LOL. https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/#/ This will display nearby providers. For plans, you should visit each provider’s website and check comparisons. Keep in mind any limits they impose. Comcast for example has a cap of 1 TB across the US, which might be why you’re limited in the Northeast area.

It's strange your Wi-Fi works much better than your Ethernet connection. Could there be a difference in how they're set up or interference affecting the signal?

Comcast appears to be the best option because it's a cable provider, while others use satellite. Would upgrading your modem help reduce your ping?
