It seems the 3.0 lanes connect directly to the 4.0 lanes in a one-to-one setup, which shouldn’t slow down the chipset. I’m uncertain about bifurcation mechanics and don’t have time to go through PCIe documentation.
This could be a better time to wait on purchases. In my region, the 3080Ti, 3080, 3070, and 6900XT models are gradually becoming available again. Prices remain elevated, but they’re helping stabilize the used market. A 3070Ti is currently priced similarly to my 2080Super at the time of purchase. The 6900XT’s price has also dropped slightly here, making it more competitive with a 3080Ti. It seems this shift has only lasted about a week, so if these items remain in stock, the trend might persist.
The situation seems endless for us. I question whether it’s cheaper to buy just one item from your country instead of paying a high price from a reseller.
All talks around PCIe lanes are being discussed. The CPU provides 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, while 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes are sent to the chipset. This equates to roughly 8 PCIe 3.0 lanes in terms of bandwidth. The chipset then organizes these lanes into PCIe 4.0 connections, directing them to various locations such as the motherboard slots (typically just four PCIe 4.0 slots), M.2 connectors, and PCIe x1 slots. For the X570 chipset, I believe there are around ten PCIe lanes available, though I’m not certain. The remaining twenty PCIe lanes from the CPU are directed to PCIe x16 slots and M.2 connectors. Four lanes go into the M.2 slot, then the motherboard decides whether to combine all sixteen lanes into one x16 slot or split them across two x16 slots if there are multiple cards. The RX 580 is a PCIe 3.0 graphics card; inserting it into the x16 lane slot will automatically downgrade its lanes to PCIe 3.0 speeds, which should still function properly. To utilize CPU lanes at full speed, you could place the GPU into the slot that uses the chipset’s four lanes, even though those lanes will revert to PCIe 3.0. The Asus Hyper card depends on a PCIe feature called BIFURFCATION. The motherboard’s BIOS must explicitly recognize it to properly handle multiple M.2 SSDs and detect them. If BIFURCATION isn’t supported, the card will likely appear as a PCIe 4.0 x4 card, allowing only the first M.2 SSD (using the initial four lanes) to be recognized and used.
