The external drive is only for video and photo tasks, and each time you transfer it between your desktop and laptop it resets its letters. I need to re-link all the media to my software. Can I permanently assign a drive letter to this external drive?

You're likely able to manage it in the driver's interface, though I'm uncertain about its long-term stability.

You can modify the drive letter in the Windows Disk Management tool, and after reassigning it to a specific letter on your laptop, it should no longer change frequently.

It could affect compatibility depending on the differences between the versions.

It doesn't matter. The disk management tool appears the same on both my device and my parent's Windows 7 machine.

It didn’t go as planned. The drive was moved to M on the desktop, but it ended up staying as M on your laptop. You might need to change its assignment again on the laptop to match the desktop setting.

Changing it to the desired letter on the laptop should resolve the issue, since the device is continuously altering it...
