Hey there, so I just got my laptop open—an Acer Travelmate 8472. It was getting hot enough that Open Hardware Monitor flagged it, and I noticed some other problems. After taking it apart and removing the CPU cooler, I found out the main culprit: the thermal paste had seeped onto the CPU dies. Even though the processor still ran, the paste spread a lot. I cleaned it off, but now I’m worried about damaging the tiny traces or components if I try to remove it with a screwdriver. Plus, I don’t have Isopropyl alcohol on hand. Any tips on handling this situation safely?

I think the extra thermal paste should only be applied where needed, since it won’t interfere with anything else and isn’t obstructing movement.

Instead of isopropyl alcohol, consider acetone—available at pharmacies or stores selling nail polish remover (check the label for acetone content). You can also try regular sanitary alcohol (denatured), letting it dry completely. For solvents that work well, lighter fluid or gasoline act as light solvents; use them to soften the paste, then wipe with cotton tips dipped in water to remove any residue. Alternatively, simply moisten cotton tips with water and gently clean the surface—some impurities are acceptable since the material isn’t conductive. Allow the area to dry, letting warm air from a hair dryer nearby help evaporate moisture.

It turned out I wasn’t doing much beyond taking all the thermal paste off the edges of the CPU die. @TomvanWijnen was right—placing thermal paste on components like resistors that don’t require it doesn’t create problems or cause significant differences. The laptop now runs cooler.
