I mean I'm referring to gameplay recordings. I might be filming a tutorial, a Photoshop project, or even my startup screen/BIOS if that worked. Imagine having a spare laptop nearby with a solid HDD. You'd set it up to record gameplay from your Desktop. Perfectly, if you had an HDMI connection for your main monitor on the desktop, you could purchase an HDMI splitter to send one signal to the monitor and another possibly to USB? Have the laptop identify it as a webcam input and configure it for capture (using any software that records webcams). But if it were that simple, no one would buy capture cards and just send an HDMI signal directly to their computers (though it might still cause lag). The point is though, I've heard people mention "capture PC." Do you think it means a powerful machine just for capturing games, or a specific PC to get gameplay footage and save it? I'm just seeking some understanding, thanks.
It seems this won't function, you'll likely need a capture card instead...
Generally, you'll need a capture card. One friend has a PC designed specifically for recording and editing, which uses an internal PCIe capture card. Connecting an HDMI cable to a laptop port should make it recognize the output, not just input. I've attempted that method before.
For saving data on a computer, you'll require an input port. Because many modern laptops don't have S-Video, a capture card becomes necessary. If you're curious about how BIOS, POST and loading screens are handled before the operating system loads, people use a camera to capture the screen and store it in memory.
