I decided to go with the Ryzen upgrade. I still use my FX 8350 and recently purchased a Ryzen 5 2600, motherboard, and RAM from Newegg since the price is currently 46% off in Canada. I'm on a tight budget and plan to eventually get a 1TB Intel 660p SSD, as they provide over Gigabit speeds at great rates. It should be about a month or two away. For now, I'll keep using my V300 and A400 drives with 240GB capacity. Will running my current OS on the Ryzen work? Or will I need to completely reset it? Should I tweak my system before switching? I recall when I moved from Core2Quad Q6600 to FX8350, I had to reinstall Windows because even the recovery didn't help. I think that was mainly due to the Intel-to-AMD switch. I'm hoping this will be similar—staying on AMD means no need to reinstall Windows. Thoughts?

Windows 10 has improved significantly, though a fresh installation might be best. You can upgrade smoothly with few problems if you let Windows handle driver updates. Recently, I switched from Intel to AMD and Windows recognized the change during startup within roughly half an hour.

I remember how I moved from the Q6600 to the FX 8350—Windows 10 felt fresh for about a year or two, and it’s nice to see improvements since then. I think I’ll stick with my current OS until the M.2 upgrade, then reinstall when the time comes.
