She has two MacBook Airs, one with 2600 photos stored in iCloud Drive that aren’t backing up to her time machine backup. Can you try transferring them to the other laptop using iCloud or another laptop-to-laptop method? Also, I don’t like using IPHOTO—just a bit frustrated since on Windows it’s just a folder called photos. Sorry!

Can’t you connect the same iCloud account on the second device and simply download the files? It could take a hundred years with a slow connection, but it’s definitely straightforward for me. Also, a USB stick?

External USB HDDs, especially compact models without needing a power adapter.

Only one image can be downloaded at once. Exporting your collection isn't possible. The system generates numerous issues.

You tried and what happened? You need to format the disk in HFS or Fat 32 to make it work right on a Mac Also, there is a folder with the photos in it on the Mac, it works like OneDrive except it goes to iCloud.

I found the iphoto library file on my mom's backup—it’s about 33.4 GB. That’s a big size! Thanks for letting me know.

It’s more efficient to configure a network share and utilize the network for file transfers. Purchasing a drive isn’t necessary if you’re only saving images once.

It seems the external drive is likely the most dependable method for future backups.

Have you explored SSH? You haven’t used MacBooks yet, but what will you do with a second laptop?
