USB controllers occasionally changing players while playing
Hi--
I’m facing a rather unusual issue that hasn’t been documented before. During gameplay, when 2 or 3 controllers are connected, at some point between 5 to 10 minutes, the controllers seem to swap places randomly. For example, player 1 might suddenly control player 3, and this only occurs once per game session. It doesn’t happen again unless the game is closed and restarted. This has happened in just a couple of games so far. I’ve tested it with two Steam games using USB-A controllers plugged into a USB-C hub—two Logitech F310s and one Playstation imitator. The controller labels are missing, making it hard to identify the exact version. My system runs Lenovo Legion 5 with Windows 11 64 bit Home. The problem started with Spiderheck and later appeared in Goat Simulator 3, marking the first occurrence outside that game. It’s been ongoing for about two weeks without any changes to hardware settings. I’m wondering if the USB-C hub might be involved, or if it could affect other peripherals like a mouse and headphones. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
I have 2 or 3 controllers which are USB-A controllers, but they are plugged into a USB-C hub.
Might want to mention the make and model of your aforementioned hub.
Two of them are Logitech F310s and one is a Playstation imitator, the labeling is gone from the controller so I don't know what version.
Take a picture of the Playstation controller, host it on a site akin to Imgur and then pass on a link for us to see. Taking multiple pictures from multiple angles of the controller would help us identify it.
Machine info : Lenovo Legion 5 with Windows 11 64 bit Home.
You're on a laptop. We'd need to know the SKU since each SKU might discrepancies with their ports;
With two controller only, and using the USB A ports(assuming you have 2 for the controller, do you encounter the same issue?
I would also try and see if the hub behaves the same way on another platform, similar spec'd laptop and desktop, to see if your hub is at fault or the USB ports on your current laptop.
Hardware operations are represented in its drivers. Not every driver includes all hardware instructions, which may cause issues like incompatibility, errors, or glitches. For PnP devices, it must use WUD. The main idea is that this could stem from driver problems, possibly due to a Windows update or conflicts with the game and its drivers.
Hi--
Regarding the SKU, I haven't managed to locate such a label on the PC. My belief is that it's distinct from the serial number, and I'm uncertain whether to share my serial number in a forum. The ports are two USB-C on the left side, USB-C in the rear, two USB-A in the rear, and one USB-A on the right. In fact, all the USB-A ports are non-functional. After extensive troubleshooting and even visiting a laptop repair shop, we concluded the ports were dead—possibly due to overheating. It's been about two weeks since this issue started, whereas I've been using the USB-C to USB-A hub for roughly three months.
I think it would be wise to start the driver troubleshooting process again. It's always frustrating because the Device Manager shows more USB ports than are actually present on the laptop, making it a tedious task to identify what's real and what isn't. For example, I've never had a swapping issue before, but now it's happening.
Appreciate the advice, and I'll keep monitoring this thread if anyone has additional suggestions.
These kinds of driver TS can sometimes be quite frustrating, so I usually skip them unless they're really costly or significant. I'd prefer to swap out the hub or console if that resolves the problem. Another approach could be checking for spare parts, unless you've already tried that.
