I'm working on getting your external USB to boot properly. WinUSB Maker said it was created but nothing happens when you try to start it. You're trying to reinstall Vista Business on an old Dell laptop that's running low on cash—just $0.38 left. It has a decent specs list but a failing DVD drive and a slow HDD. The USB is a 320GB drive connected via adapter. Maybe check the drive connection, try a different USB port, or ensure the OS is fully installed before booting. If it still doesn't work, consider a different approach or backup your data.

It won’t be quick, yet have you considered running Linux on that device? Windows Vista is no longer backed by updates and most programs can’t run anymore.

Consider setting up Ubuntu, as it performs better and supports installation on a USB drive rather than a traditional hard drive.

She is older than me by eight years (I'm 49) and she knows very little about XP plus I already have three different Vista Business product keys or licenses. I use it on a Dell Latitude laptop and everything works fine. I believe the Vista Business platform is built on XP. I attempted to run Linux (Mint, Debian, Ubuntu) but couldn't install WLAN drivers, so I had to do a full installation and faced the same problems with USB setup. (Ugh, the DVD/RAM is broken, ISOs would be much simpler now)

Vista Business runs on Linux instead of XP. While Linux differs from Windows, it offers a much better choice for an older, slower laptop compared to Vista. Installing Wi-Fi drivers on Linux—especially with Mint—could be beneficial if you plan to use the device.

she uses an HP Pavilion x360 with windows 10 that i recently updated today. fixing it was straightforward—just restart and install the latest updates from the past year (43 in total). it took about three hours. her insipiron serves as her primary device for schoolwork, storing all her files and assignments due to its larger storage capacity. remember, she’s determined and acts as the client, so i have to meet her expectations.
