I need to find a compatible external 10GbE network adapter that fits in the USB 3.1 Gen 2 port on your Asus WS x299 Sage. It should work with both Windows and Ubuntu without needing free PCIe slots.

I haven't seen 10gbe usb yet, only 5gbe or TB 10gbe. I am pretty sure there is one though but probably at a premium over your standard pcie NIC. Edit: still can only find TB NICs.... Maybe you can use an M.2 Slot though and convert that to standard pciex4 and run an internal NIC anyways? That should work

Following the overhead, the 10Gbe model would be reduced to about 6, which is why they only went as far as 5. With both a 5 USB-C and a 10 Thunderbolt connection, it’s likely a matter of cost and thermal management. The two 10GbEs come with large heatsinks and run quietly, while the 5 uses plastic and feels much warmer. It seems it takes more effort to squeeze out the extra performance from the 5.

Both m.2 connections are in use—one for Windows and one for Ubuntu. I’ll look into the 5Gbe USB version. The OWC 10Gbe Thunderbolt 3 would have been perfect, but unfortunately there’s no TB3 port available on the board.

It looks like you're using a 5GbE adapter on your Synology NAS via USB, and you're checking if it works with desktop operating systems too.
