I finally got my 2009 MacBook up and running, but the built-in recovery isn’t working—showing “This item is temporarily unavailable.” I downloaded a .dmg file and used Transmac to make a bootable USB, though it doesn’t appear in the boot menu. It’s frustrating, so I’m looking for some guidance. Thanks!

I don’t have access to another Mac. The previous attempt to use a Mac inside a VM didn’t let me enable USB passthrough.

Consider using an older Mac VM such as Maverick. It's available in a restricted area. You should either fix the transmac issue or adjust the VM setup. Transmac isn't a trustworthy method for burning Dmg.

Sounds like you're figuring it out, but it's toughing it out. Let's try again! 😅

Hope the DVD functions properly, it's been a decade.

Are you trying to create the bootable USB from a Windows or Mac? If doing it with a Mac you can use this article to help you. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372 If you are doing it from Windows there is a work around way but a lot harder. The issue with creating a bootable USB as well is you will have to change the date manually through Terminal or sometimes you can run into errors with the installer or so I have learned. Let me know what you have to work with!

Attempting to create the bootable file via Windows. Successfully adjusted the date/time and reset the NVRAM, yet the issue persists

I suggest visiting the Apple store or contacting an Apple Service Provider. Generally, creating a functional bootable USB requires downloading the operating system and using a Mac OS terminal. You might also share details about the methods you've used so I can explore alternatives. For now, just tell me: 1) Your approach to building the USB. 2) The Mac OS version you're considering (I assume it's around 2009, which supports High Sierra or Mojave). Once I know, I can help further with your Windows-based USB project.
