Upgrading to a Ryzen 7000 processor Switching to a newer Ryzen 7000 chipset for better performance
I made a mistake by attempting direct die cooling on my Ryzen 7950X. I assumed it would be simple, but the temperature dropped too much. I ended up needing a custom mounting solution since my AIO didn’t let the die touch the airflow. Without a CNC machine, I’m stuck with a delidded board and no easy fix. I’m considering buying a new cooler or backplate, or even replacing the whole unit. I’m looking for advice on adhesives and other ideas to get it working before resorting to a full rebuild. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Two choices exist: refresh the CPU or rebuild the mounting hardware. Using a liquid metal sandwich (CPU > LM > IHS > LM > Cooler) often delivers strong performance and is likely the simplest option. Apply the floating IHS technique without re-securing it, which seems straightforward. Based on this video, direct die might work better if you invest in cleaning the CPU cooler. Rebuilding the hardware is still possible with standard M3.5 screws and a regular bracket/backplate if the AIO uses the usual mounting system.
A floating IHS could actually increase the chance of liquid metal ending up in unwanted areas. For extra safety, I’d prefer a non-conductive paste.
We're discussing a type of silicone adhesive. It's likely a flexible, water-resistant glue often used for bonding materials in various applications.
