Upgrading to a fresh motherboard and processor
Hello, I’m moving from an Intel-based system to a Ryzen 5900X with an MSI B550 Gaming Plus. I had some concerns about what changes I need to make in Windows—like swapping components and replacing cases. Since I haven’t connected a new CPU or motherboard yet, should I still use a USB drive for Windows after the swap? And regarding the NH-U12S Redux fan, would it be sufficient for long-term operation?
I completed the update without reinstalling Windows, though eventually I did a full reinstall. For stability, it’s usually better to start with a clean install and apply the latest updates. There appear to be several issues causing Windows to become unstable.
I believed I could skip a full reset, but it only held up until I realized how severely damaged it was, forcing a complete reinstall. It functions now, though I would have saved more than eight hours by starting with a clean setup from the outset.
Which version? 10 or 11, you simply configure the same BIOS setup and reconnect. Usually the system adapts hardware changes on its own. Intel versus AMD works similarly, I didn’t face issues. If you’re cautious, enter save mode before swapping, remove all drivers—especially Intel ones—and restart the process. Avoid booting Windows after saving mode to prevent reinstalling missing drivers.
