I'm working from home with a single PC—a 1.5 GHz i5 with 16 GB DDR3 RAM. It runs fine but compilation and deployment are slow, and the CPU usage often hits 100%. I'm looking for the best upgrade within my budget to speed things up. Options include: 1) Upgrade to an i7-2600 for $60, 2) Add more RAM, CPU, or a new motherboard (R3 3100), or 3) Consider an R5-2600.
A 2600 or 3770 would make a good improvement, but I’d keep the budget under $120.
I suggest considering Ryzen for now, since you can always upgrade later to something like the R9 3950X (16 cores, 32 threads) if your motherboard allows it. If you wait and get a B550 board, you'll also be able to install future Ryzen 4000 series chips, whereas with older Intel models you're limited to a 4-core hyperthreaded processor. Currently, a 2600/1600AF remains the top option, but if budget is tight or you prefer not to invest now, an i7-2600 or 3770 would be a solid alternative.
If you push it beyond its limits, even without the boost, it will still outperform a 3770.

3rd generation Intel needs support on 2nd generation chips, often through BIOS upgrades. My OptiPlex 7010 works fine with both 2nd and 3rd generation processors.
It appears to be a solid long-term investment according to my view, given the numerous upgrade possibilities. I’m really impressed that AMD managed to release a 16-core CPU for consumers.
