I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU because it's not running smoothly in games like Rust. I have an R5 7600X and am weighing the move to an R7 9800X3D as a longer-term solution. I'm still unsure if it's worth it or if I should hold off for a newer generation.

Your setup is more than sufficient for that classic game. You're far above the suggested hardware needs.

It's not really worthwhile, even with a 9800X3D, you'd only see about a 15% boost in most games, which is on the higher side. I think it's better to wait another generation or two and see if any adjustments to game settings improve performance.

Yeah, Artk2219 is right. The average frame rate will just increase by around 15%... and that's at 1080p. It'll be even smaller at 1440p and almost negligible at 4k.

But based on my own testing, switching from a 7600x to a 7800x3d made a massive difference in game smoothness. The minor dips are now much better. Almost all the micro-jitter has disappeared. This is with a 4080 super...

consider whether to choose the 7800x3d or opt for a larger investment with the 9800x3d.

CPU now will be longer, though we don't know what AMD will offer tomorrow. Get the best you can afford and that's the goal. This is just a simple rule for everyday items like toasters or spacecraft.

The gaming performance at 1440p is roughly 5%. The 9800x3d maintains better stability in certain games and handles other tasks more efficiently, though it may not be the best choice if you're focusing solely on gaming with a B650 motherboard. For long-term use, the 7800x3d offers better durability and performance, especially as AM6 technology advances. I've used it myself and am satisfied after upgrading from the R5 5600. Your 7600x remains a solid option for gaming.
