Upgrading from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 after installing a new CPU and motherboard.
Hi everyone! I’m using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OEM in Polish, and it was first activated on this machine: Modecom Carbon MC530 MSI 770-45c Phenom II x6 2,8Ghz 1055t ADATA 2x2GB 1600 Radeon HD5770 1gb Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM. I’ve replaced everything except the CPU and HDD, which I used as a boot drive now. My current setup includes: Corsair 230t Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0, Corsair CX500M Phenom II x6 1055t @3,5Ghz, CoolerMaster 212 evo GTX 970, G1 Gaming HyperX 2x8GB, 1866 Samsung 840 evo 120gb, Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM. I can now activate my Windows copy via phone. Next week I’ll get a 4790k MSI Z970s SLI Krait edition, and I’m curious if it will still work with phone activation on that system. Regarding upgrading to Windows 10: should I go for option a or b? Option a suggests upgrading now with a clean install after downloading the OS, while option b recommends installing Windows 7 on new hardware, hoping it activates and then cleaning it later. Which path do you think is best?
You can still turn it on using the phone. For Windows 10, consider upgrading (verify activation status) and then perform a clean install. You have two options: go through the full process and wait for updates or prompts, or download an ISO online and upgrade manually.
Upgrading hardware isn't possible on an upgraded W10 due to activation restrictions. You'll need to reinstall and activate your W7 version first, then proceed with the upgrade. Avoid downloading all updates—use this tool: https://www.microsoft.com/da-dk/software.../windows10. It's unclear if this applies to OEM models.
