Upgrading from gtx 1080 to rtx 2060
Hey everyone, just wanted to ask a quick thing. I have an i7 6700k with 16 GB RAM, different modules, and a GTX 1080 RX 1080. I upgraded my whole PC recently—new CPU i7 9700K, 16 GB RAM at the same speed, teamgruld CL16, and an RTX 2060.
Some people say the GTX 1080 is better than the RTX 2060, but I'm thinking about whether to keep my GTX 1080 or switch to the RTX 2060. The main difference is whether ray tracing would work on the new setup. I really hope I get clear and helpful answers, thanks!
Their results are fairly balanced. I’d maintain the RTX 2060 since you still have driver support, and the 1080 won’t get that. The RTX 2060 can also leverage DLSS.
The 1080 is genuinely around 10% quicker than the 2060, which isn't something you'd easily notice while wearing seat pants. With the reduction in driver support, it will gradually become less optimized for newer titles. In my view, the 1080 is probably one of the top graphics cards ever created, but its time has come to end with the decline in support.
Sure, I understand why you're finding it difficult to be convinced. But I get what you're saying.
You should have checked the forum before deciding on that purchase, because switching from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 2060 isn’t really worthwhile.
They’re quite similar in performance, though the 1080 offers more VRAM.
A few days ago I upgraded from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 2070 Super and noticed a noticeable improvement—about a 25% boost.
More importantly, I was able to sell my GTX 1080 for $200 and buy the RTX 2070 S for $220, making the upgrade almost cost-free.
Perhaps you should consider selling both cards and see which one sells quicker or at a better price.
It doesn’t really justify keeping two identical cards at home unless you plan to set up a secondary system.
Or better yet, sell both and invest in something like the Radeon 7800X.
