Upgrading from an RTX 2060 Super to an RTX 4070 Super in 2025
Hey everyone,
I’m thinking about replacing the GPU I’ve been using for about three years. Right now I’m playing in 1080p, but I hope to upgrade to 1440p next year. I found a used RTX 4070 Super on the market for 520 USD, which is pretty standard in my country—especially if you buy a new one. Alternatively, I could get a fresh RX 9060 XT with 16GB for 430 USD.
The main question is whether this upgrade is worth it (helps with future upgrades?) or if I should hold off until next year. I mostly play heavily modded Skyrim lately and have been getting stutters, so upgrading seemed like a good idea.
Also, I’m wondering if my PSU can handle the changes—especially if I decide to underclock and lower the power limit.
My current setup looks like this:
- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
- GPU: MSI RTX 2060 Super
- RAM: G.Skill 32GB 3600mhz DDR4
- HDD: 1TB WD Blue, 2TB WD Purple
- MOBO: Asus A320M-K
- PSU: Corsair CX550-M
- SSD: Transcend 2TB M.2 nvme
- Monitor: Samsung 24" 1080p 60Hz
Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks!
Also, does your PSU have enough capacity if you decide to underclock and reduce the power limit?
PSU: Corsair CX550-M
The PSU is quite old; even if it were brand new, you should consider upgrading to a higher wattage and better quality unit. This applies whether you have the RTX 4070 Super or the RX 9060 XT. Given you're using the RTX 2060 Super, it's recommended to opt for the RTX 5000 series instead of the RTX 4000 series.
Unfortunately, these are the typical low prices in my country, particularly when purchasing new units.
Where is this location on the map?
My PSU is about five years old now.
Also, the price for that 4070 Super is really hard to find—it's like a rare animal sighting. A new RTX 5070 is over 600 dollars, and even used ones are close to that amount. The RX 9070 non-XT is around 700 dollars as well.
I'm from the Philippines, so GPU prices here are... pretty disappointing.
The 4070 Super seems like a solid purchase, but when you buy it, make sure to also upgrade your power supply. Your current one isn’t just too weak, it’s also of lower quality (Corsair CX PSUs aren’t very reliable).
On the other hand, Corsair RM Series PSUs offer excellent performance. I’d suggest upgrading to a Corsair RM750x.
This upgrade will also help with future-proofing, especially if you switch to 1440p next year.
Later Po.
It's clear that 4070 Super offers the stronger long-term value, while the 9060 xt provides solid worth for 1440p gaming. Your 550w PSU should perform adequately if you maintain a balanced power usage.
