I received an older 4th generation Intel system with DDR3 RAM and was planning to upgrade it affordably. I intended to run Linux on it. It’s an HP Slimline 410-109 model that supports DDR3, running at 1600MHz, with a claimed maximum of 16GB. There’s speculation it might handle up to 32GB, though I’m uncertain. Upgrading the BIOS didn’t seem necessary. A 32GB upgrade would likely be costly and unnecessary at this point. I purchased two used memory sticks, but the seller didn’t include an anti-static bag, which upset my friend—he seemed correct that one stick might be faulty. Now the system has only 12GB total: one 8GB stick is functional, the other isn’t, and the existing 4GB stick remains. I’m unsure what to do next.

I was considering buying 16GB sticks on Amazon for around $25 CAD, assuming they’d work. I also bought a used i5-4790T CPU for $5 from the same seller. It seems rare for such a CPU to fail, and there were no bent pins detected. Memory testing is still preliminary.

My advice: memory isn’t expensive, but reliability matters. If you’re comfortable with risk, try installing different Linux distributions on this machine to see how it performs. I thought about setting it up as an experimental dual-boot system—using separate M.2 NVMe SSDs—and eventually transferring it to a better build for long-term use. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD would be ideal, but the current HDD is still present.

What do you think? Would experimenting with various OSes give you useful insights before committing?

No reason to spend money upgrading it. You can find a whole PC better than that one for less than the cost of the upgrades If you have an SSD and DDR3 laying around, upgrading those would be fine but I definitely wouldn't pay for them

If it's just a trial, go ahead. Everyone spends cash on things they really want to try, and boosting RAM plus an SSD would be the best upgrades for any older system. RAM doesn’t require anti-static protection—I drop mine everywhere when I upgrade or purchase new ones. Right now I have DDR3 in a box on my shelf; it’ll work fine when I need it. I’m not sure about Linux distributions yet.

If it's just a trial, go ahead. Everyone spends cash on things they really want to try, and boosting RAM plus an SSD would be the best upgrades for any older system. RAM doesn’t require anti-static protection—I drop mine everywhere when I upgrade or purchase new ones. Right now I have DDR3 in a box on my shelf; it’ll work fine when I need it. I’m not sure about Linux distributions yet.

RAM should be protected from static electricity. It's possible you were unlucky, or your RAM might be faulty—only testing with tools like Memtest or Prime95 can confirm the issue.

I believe you're heading in the right direction with upgrades. A little extra RAM, a modest processor upgrade, and even though these components might be uncertain, it's acceptable to take that chance to prevent spending a lot on an outdated machine. Keeping static is good practice, but many people don't have it on hand to sell such parts for $5 or $10.

There isn't sufficient random static to affect my couch, bed, or carpet. RAM isn't designed to handle anti-static features—it's a plastic case that might not store any charge. Or are those anti-static cases? Even GPUs come with bubble wrap or crumpled paper safely. Just be careful and use them, but RAM doesn't require anti-static protection and isn't harmed by being in a box or on the bed.

Cotton and paper offer minimal risk for static generation, making them relatively safe. I keep hard drives in cotton canvas bags and smaller parts like RAM and PCIE cards in envelopes. The SSD options are around $40 plus tax, usually entry-level models like TeamGroup, FiKlot, or Kingspec. I considered buying a pre-built business PC with most parts already installed, but it would likely cost more—around $70. I think the benefit of buying these components on Amazon is they should still function and there’s often a refund policy. I was mainly trying to cut costs because this machine is quite outdated.
