I'm preparing my computer upgrade which includes a new motherboard, CPU, SSD, and memory. I just got the motherboard ASUS Z170-A, Samsung 850 Evo 250G, and DDR4 16GB RAM. I have a few questions: Should I wait until the CPU is installed before putting the OS on the SSD? Does it really matter if I do a fresh install before finishing the new build? I'm not sure, but having a head start on the OS would be helpful while I wait for the hardware. Thanks for any advice.

I think I need to be more clear. I currently have everything ready (using it as I type). My goal was to install the OS on the SSD in my existing setup, and once the CPU comes, I can take it apart. This makes sense?
If you're also replacing the motherboard, this won't work.
Wait until all new components are assembled before installing the OS.

96eagle :
I'm upgrading my computer which is going to involve a new MoBo, CPU,SSD and memory. I have just received the MoBo which is ASUS Z170-A , Samsung 850 Evo 250G, and DDR4 16GB sticks.
My question: Do I wait until the CPU arrives to install OS on the SSD? Does it matter if i have a fresh install on it before completing the new build?
I'm not sure if it matters, would be nice to have a head start on OS install while i wait for the brains.
Thanks for any imput.
What OS is this?
Yes, it matters.
Generally, you wait until it is built with the new hardware, and then install the OS.

I haven't tried that before... installing an OS without a CPU sounds unusual. You do have an HDD, but I think the OS would still need the CPU to configure the device manager and related components. However, with modern motherboards, things might be different. Also, did you check if your power supply was upgraded?

I think it would be better to be more precise. I currently have a complete setup (using it as I type). My goal was to install the operating system onto the SSD in my existing configuration, and once the CPU arrives I could dismantle this unit. Does that make sense?

USAFRet, this was somewhat what I expected but not entirely certain. Just aiming to stay ahead while it lasts.
Thanks again!
