Brother-in-law purchased a new CPU and mainboard. All he received were red and yellow LEDs. After inspecting everything, we removed the CPU again. It was evident some pins were bent. He claims he didn<|pad|> to drop it and the cover stayed closed. I suggested he initiate a return or replacement. Do you have any background on bent pins on new boards? Is it possible to fix this issue? (No photo available, appears in the lowest row 3 where bent)

50/50 bent pins can be fixed if you're confident with your grip. If you think they were bent before installing the CPU, reconsider using RMA—it might not be the best option. I haven't used MSI RMA personally, so I can't share my experience. Visit their website and open a support ticket to check the process and requirements. If you can, share a photo of the pins for better guidance.

Here’s a simple version of your note:

I’m sending a low-quality image right now. I’ll aim for a clearer shot soon. It’s difficult to see clearly—this one is in the upper right corner, right at the edge.

If I see correctly, there are like 2 or 3 bent pins ? You should try to RMA first. This is a new product and it should be in new _and_ working condition. If they won't RMA for a reason or another, I suggest you use a pin map to know what those pins connect to. There are pins you can't do without but some pins (like extra ground pins) can be ignored if you break them. If you go with unbending, be very very gentle because these are super fragile. Good luck !

He ordered the board from Amazon and it looks like they'll just accept it as a return. Pins look pretty nasty: I'd guess the biggest issue is the short that one of the pins is creating. Looks pretty mangled, not sure I would want to try and bent that back. Chance of breaking them off would be pretty high.

It seems like there might be a production problem with those pins. It's unlikely he bent them by not placing the CPU correctly.
