It's mostly about Enterprise features; a general upgrade wouldn't apply. Switching from Windows 7 to 8 is feasible if you pay the upgrade fee, but changing from non-to-n to normal isn't possible either. There really isn't a direct upgrade route for that...

If you format the drive for a clean installation, then it isn't an upgrade. You should mention that instead of "upgrade," say "clean install."

Absolutely, you have the freedom to pick any operating system you prefer! I’d probably choose Windows 8.1 and switch to Windows 10 within two days. If you’re a student or someone who knows a student, getting the Windows 8.1 Pro for $59 instead of $199 would be a smart move. That’s exactly what I did ten days ago after spending three years using pirated Windows 7 Ultimate.

The codes you discover on Reddit are either original manufacturer keys or Microsoft documentation keys. For the OEM keys, they are tied to the motherboard and cannot be moved to another machine.
