I previously used Windows 8.1 before Windows 10 was released, and I received a free upgrade at that time. I've been using it for more than 18 months now. If I format my PC, will it revert to Windows 8.1 or remain on Windows 10? Thanks.

Formatting the drive removes the operating system. During installation, you choose the desired OS to install.

Formatting the drive deletes everything permanently, so you can't go back to an older operating system. The hard drive will be empty and need a fresh OS installed.

When I need to completely erase a system and start fresh, I always perform a full hard drive format and reinstall the operating system. It's manageable but demands more expertise than most users have. If your goal is similar, the Windows Reset Utility is likely the best choice for you.
