I have Windows 10 Home on my laptop. I’m looking to upgrade to the Pro version because I need drive encryption and access to a Windows Domain. From what I understand on the Microsoft site, I can buy a Pro key online and install it on my Home version, which will automatically activate all the new features without needing a full reinstall. Someone mentioned that buying an OEM product key might save money, but I’m curious if that approach would work similarly. Let me know your thoughts.

The most affordable option is to purchase the key on Reddit's r/MicrosoftSoftwareSwap community.

It asks if it's feasible using an OEM key instead of focusing on the most affordable choice.

I tried it out. I purchased an OEM Windows 10 Pro key from Kinguin. Then I accessed the activation page for Windows 10 Home, entered the new product key, and Windows reported it as invalid. It seems either the key is faulty or there are specific keys needed to upgrade from Home to Pro. Hmm.

Avoid following suggestions from Reddit or Kinguin communities. The original equipment manufacturer key isn't the same as an upgrade, and it's not intended for you—it's meant for OEM users. The proper method to upgrade is via the MS Store, which you can reach through the control panel.
