Upgrade your Win10 PC with the right hardware components.
I'm working on upgrading several PCs by swapping out their MB and CPU for hardware that supports Win11. One unit with an Intel 6xxx→12xxx upgrade booted normally after the change. Another has BIOS indicating no bootable drives despite having all listed partitions. Could it be that the Win10 installation from a while ago isn't compatible with newer MBs? Is there anything in Win10 you can do to prepare it for this upgrade? Just to clarify, the jump from an Intel 4xxx to an AMD 9600X is quite a leap. Also, I used another SSD with Linux that successfully detected and booted the drive. Thanks, Greg.
Windows 10 setup likely uses an MBR partition instead of a GPT one. Older BIOS versions may not support these drives by default, so you'll need to locate and switch the booting mode from UEFI to legacy/BIOS. If it works, you can use software such as MBR2GPT to transform the partition.
CSM functions on systems that don't support Windows 11 or secure boot, yet it's essential for starting from an MBR disk.
I’m back using the old MB/CPU with Windows 10. What should I do next? Should I run MBR2GPT now? Will it still work after I perform that step? I’m aiming to have everything configured correctly and ensure it runs smoothly with the existing setup while also incorporating the new hardware. Edit: Just confirmed, the C drive is currently running the original MBR.
Follow the guide step by step. The previous motherboard can handle both partition styles.
