I've been staying at home with my family since the COVID-19 outbreak, which made our internet situation really challenging. We've chosen to upgrade to a faster connection, aiming for speeds between 105-150 Mbps, though I haven't actually reached that level. My ISP says everything looks fine, but my coverage isn't great. What are your ideas for improving the internet without spending much? Thanks for your help!

When using WiFi, identify the type you have. Wireless N may offer up to 60-70 Mb/s at best. For higher speeds, choose Wireless AC. You need a router that supports WiFi AC and a compatible network card. Alternatively, opt for a wired connection for faster and more reliable performance.

You're questioning whether the issue can be resolved. Our service includes 300mbps Ethernet, but the ISP only reaches 100mbps under optimal conditions. We use up-to-date hardware, yet they aren't required to deliver the speed you paid for. Consider investing in a better router and Ethernet cables, but it may not justify the cost unless your network equipment is outdated.

Start by understanding the broader issue affecting internet usage. Demand for web content is rising, with most activity occurring throughout the day rather than just after work. If your neighbors are sharing the same internet service and overloading their connections, yours will too. You haven’t specified how your home network is set up. Does your provider offer a basic modem or a combo-modem/router with a wireless access point, or are you using your own router? Are you experiencing slower speeds on a wired connection or a wireless one? If you connect your device directly via Ethernet to the modem/gateway—without any other network traffic—perform a speed test on DSLReports.com and share your findings.

I own a vibrant color router from the provider, and I've been considering upgrading for some time. I'm currently using Wi-Fi, but I wasn't expecting my connection to drop to over four times the advertised speed (when everything functions properly). I thought speed would decrease now, but not enough to make the internet completely unreliable.
