family covers 200mbps yet the old combo unit only delivers 30mbps. Air speed tops out at 20 Mbps with significant drops in the kilobytes. The system now positions the internet via coax, entering the combo unit in the basement media room, broadcasting three floors up throughout the house. They plan an upgrade around $200. Will this coax setup connect to an Ethernet adapter for the tp link mesh system? The home spans about 2,000 square feet with no run coax or Ethernet. Adapter link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077Y3...ZUQ2FCU4MN & tp link mesh: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084GT...PDKIKX0DER

You're unsure about your setup since you didn't mention any coax or ethernet connections. Are you thinking about installing new wiring? If you decide to use coax, you'll need to route it through the modem and connect it to a MoCA adapter for Ethernet, then extend it to another floor with another adapter to link to your mesh router. This setup requires two MoCA adapters unless your ISP supports multiple IP addresses. Your choice should also consider whether cables will run outside or inside walls and your budget. Fiber is the most secure and future-proof option. Coax offers a middle ground, allowing other devices to use the same cable if needed. Ethernet is generally not recommended for outdoor runs but can be cost-effective if you plan to upgrade later. Cat 6 cabling is affordable and supports speeds up to 50 meters, which should suffice for most homes.

I'm having trouble understanding your request clearly. You're considering using a mesh setup but aren't sure if you need a modem or can connect the mesh directly to something else.

You already have a modem, but the main issue is its Wi-Fi performance. If so, turn off the Wi-Fi on it and use the new mesh Wi-Fi you intend to purchase as an additional router? Keep in mind that some ISP modems/routers can function as a basic MOCA adapter, letting your mesh router serve as the sole Internet gateway in your home to make NAT setup easier.

If internet access comes through a cable provider, you may require a Docsis 3.0 or 3.1 modem plus router, or a new gateway similar to what you currently have. For fiber service, it’s likely you own a Moca router, which isn’t typically available at local Best Buy.
