I recently switched from an i5 6600k to a 5600x, and my 2400mhz Corsair LXP ran smoothly at 3000mhz with no problems in memtest or crashes for years. After upgrading to the 5600x, I found it hard to push RAM beyond 2666 even at 1.4 volts. I wondered why the 5600x struggles with RAM overclocking compared to the AMD system. Also, the Intel system feels slower than the AMD one in latency.
It's not. My units are R3 3100, R5 3600, and R7 5800X, all working smoothly with 4 dimmers at 3800mhz.
Did you adjust the timing settings or only modify the speed? I notice you tend to use more relaxed primary timings for Intel T2 while opting for tighter ones on AMD T1. It’s not that timing matters much except for stability and Aida64 latency, which tends to favor tighter values. On AMD systems, latency will naturally be higher due to their clock architecture.
Consider testing a newer BIOS version, though it doesn’t always guarantee improvement. Many AMD boards still face memory overclocking issues with older A0 memory modules, particularly if they’re coming from a Skylake platform. Another approach is adjusting the SOC voltage to 1.15V—the power source for the memory controller. Most chips can hit their maximum memory speeds with SOC voltages around 1.1 to 1.2V, so 1.15V should be sufficient for most processors. Regarding latency, these modern CPUs have a different memory architecture compared to older Intel designs. Even today’s Intel processors differ significantly from their predecessors. The Aida latency test reached its peak with Kaby Lake and has increased since then due to larger, slower ring clocks in newer chips. This test is not ideal for measuring memory performance; it’s better suited for comparing identical CPU speeds or cache configurations. I’ve confirmed that my 5900X can reach up to 4800MT/s when desyncing the FCLK (only with two DIMMs). You’ll likely hit BIOS, FCLK, and motherboard restrictions before reaching the IMC limits on these chips.
I used auto-timings on the Intel system because it performed well with just adjusting the voltage and clock speed. On the AMD side, I tested many different settings but ended up settling on 2666, which offers tighter performance compared to the Intel configuration.
Ryzen 5000 has strict requirements for memory modules. I verified that 2666MHz chips functioned properly with my earlier 2133MHz Samsung C DIMM (3600MHz/3600x supports booting). Currently, I manage up to 4200MHz using the micron variant, but I’ve chosen 3600MHz for everyday tasks. Updating the firmware could allow compatibility with more options.
Spoiler My ddr3 is faster than your ddr4 =) Jokes aside maybe bios is just bugged so try updating the bios, the latency is inherent because of fclk multiplie chiplets and whatnot compared to a monolithic die, if updating to the latest bios doesnt work just keep changing bios revisions till it works For overclocking the rams once you fix the bios bug send a thaiphoon burner pic to know what ics were dealing with, if its two 2x8 kits and not a proper 4x8 then send another pic with a different ic if the rams dont have matching ics
