I chose to pamper myself and switch from my i5 8400 to a newer Ryzen setup. I received a Ryzen 5 5500 and an ASUS Prime B550N-A AC PS. Although it lacks built-in graphics, I’m using a 3060. Upon returning home, I powered down my current machine, disconnected the motherboard, and began assembling the new one. After turning it on, I only saw LEDs and a fan spinning. No progress was visible—just repeated attempts without success. At that moment, I overlooked the BIOS update and assumed the board was faulty because it was a returned unit, though the packaging claimed compatibility. I swapped it for an MSI B550-1 PRO ATX (new). Once reassembled, everything remained unchanged. I also noticed the CPU indicator light for EZ debug was lit. I researched online, tried resetting the BIOS, and downloaded the latest version from MSI’s site. I copied the file onto a new FAT32 thumb drive, renamed it to MSI.ROM, and flashed it using the BIOS button. All RAM, CPU, and GPU were removed. The red light blinked slowly, then accelerated to a steady pace, stayed that speed for a few minutes, and finally turned off. After a brief pause, I powered it down, took everything apart, and reassembled. Still nothing happened. The CPU light flipped on instantly, but resetting the CMOS didn’t alter it. It seems the CPU might be defective beyond repair. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Micro Center for a replacement. If anyone has advice or steps I could try, it would be greatly appreciated! **UPDATE** For fellow troubleshooters, always flash your BIOS—despite both units indicating compatibility, they might not have the latest version. After flashing, the BIOS still failed; I tried another CPU (Ryzen 5 5600), which worked but would crash under heavy Windows load. Early in Windows, the system froze at the splash screen with loading orbs, then crashed after a few seconds. After rebooting, it wouldn’t start properly. My memory was unstable too—four sticks total, two generic and two unknown brands. After replacing the RAM, everything functioned smoothly. I’m thrilled with the performance now. Upgraded your i5 8400 to Ryzen 5 5500 and replaced the motherboard. Did you install a new hard drive? Using the same drive for both the processor and motherboard might cause issues. It's recommended to use a different drive when installing drivers for new hardware.
I didn’t install a new boot drive; I used the existing one. However, I can’t access the BIOS to update drivers or modify the BIOS through that device. I had to rely on my laptop to create a flash drive, but it hasn’t been updated or added to the system.
The EPS cable is the 2x4 at the top left for CPU power. I plan to spray everything tomorrow when I try again.
It's a Coolermaster 750 watt bronze. I purchased it with the 3060 launch, making it roughly 18 months old.
I'm wondering if the problem is because the PSU isn't providing enough power to the CPU or motherboard, which could explain the red CPU light during startup. Could you try using a different PSU and see if it works? If it does, it likely means the CPU you bought isn't functioning properly. If it's a used one, I don't have a chance to test it before selling. If it's new, you might have been unlucky.
