Buying keys from outside the official store isn't how MS sells their product. Selling OEM keys on dead computers violates their policies. I don't care what the customers say. 99% of the time it's not legal. If you need help with piracy, just ask for advice without paying.

You're interested in moving up to the Pro version because it offers enhanced features and better performance for your needs.

Focus mainly on connecting to a domain and Hyper-V. I understand I could benefit from Virtualbox and VMWare, but Hyper-V offers native support for many of what I use. Remote Desktop is also important. @GrayTech

Upgrading Home to Pro is easy and clear. For detailed guidance, check the support page. Posting in the correct forum section provides top assistance. I've shifted the thread to the OS > Windows area.

You can still proceed with the upgrade if you obtain the activation key. Make sure the key is valid and compatible before starting the installation process.

The upgrade key is bought through the Windows 10 Store. I’m not sure about the eBay version you’re checking. We don’t know if it’s actually working yet. If it looks affordable and you’re sure, proceed with the purchase.

Alright, I understand the situation. I don’t want to take that chance. My laptop has a lot of data I’m worried about losing, and I don’t have the time or patience to reinstall everything myself. I just can’t risk it. If I ever have $100 that isn’t being used, I’ll buy Windows 10 Pro from the store.

If it's inexpensive or comes from a refurbished OEM, I assure you it won't be valid. The best chance to receive a discount from MS is during a product launch or through bulk buying with a business account.

The activation code seems to be failing. In fact, it could work eventually, but after a few days someone else used the key, resulting in your account being banned. You won't be able to revert back to Home, so you'll have to perform a fresh installation.
