I’d appreciate some guidance before making the changes. The main reason is my FPS drops on my 5700 XT with a 144Hz 1080p display. I also check comparisons on YouTube for the R5 2600 + 5700 XT, but the results vary a lot. During gameplay of The Outer Worlds, my FPS spikes in crowded city scenes while watching my character’s feet—though my character remains stationary—I see a jump to 130+ frames per second. CPU and GPU usage also drop, suggesting they’re not rendering details efficiently. I noticed similar issues with Tecware Nexus M, where improving airflow helped lower temperatures. In Fallout 4 and Euro Truck Simulator 2, FPS dips occur in cities too. Rage 2 performed well overall, though occasional drops were minor. My setup includes an R5 2600, XT 5700, A320M Pro, VHDL, 16GB teamgroup VRAM, 3200mhz RAM, 520W SSD, and a 7200RPM WD SSD.
What level of improvement do you need? Which game or settings are you using?
It would make sense to upgrade, as the Ryzen 7 performs better than the Ryzen 5 in many scenarios. However, if you plan to customize your CPU, avoid getting a B450. Opt for an X570 instead if you can afford it.
I’ve got a plan that stays within my budget, so I don’t think I need to overclock. I recall my R5 2600 doesn’t reach 3900mhz, do people ever overclock it for that speed? My max is around 3700mhz. I also ran a stress test and noticed my performance drops to about 3.5 at 85°C—this looks like thermal throttling.
If you skip overclocking, it works well. A 3.7GHz frequency suits the 2600 nicely. For 3.9GHz you’d need a solid cooler. You mentioned significant thermal throttling—what cooler are you using?
I also tried NFS Payback and noticed my FPS ranged from 65 to 80 in the city, but jumped to 100 to 130 there. On the city level, my GPU usage stayed between 70 and 85%, while my CPU hovered around 40 to 70%.
