Hey there! I've been thinking about improving my Ryzen 7 3700X setup since it came back in 2019. I've been using it at 4K resolution, but recently realized it might not be the best fit anymore. I switched to a 2K monitor at 144Hz and added an ASUS RTX 4070. While the 3700X and 4070 work well together with minimal bottlenecks (around 5% CPU usage), I'm seeing some limitations with newer AAA games that need higher specs like the 5800X3D. Benchmarks suggest the difference isn't huge in some cases. What do you think? Should I consider upgrading to something like a 13th Gen Intel or Ryzen 7000 series? I don't think the 5800X3D is worth it unless I want to stay competitive for a few years like the 3700X did. Thanks for all the advice!

Upgrading to a 6800XT would be better than the 4070, offering more power at a lower cost. The 6950XT would be perfect and still cheaper than the 4070.

The site you're referring to is likely the official benchmark page for your device or software. If you're unsure, check the manufacturer's website or the app store for the correct reference.

Okay no no I might have explained myself wrong, I am not looking to upgrade my GPU at all it's only 1 month old + I don't want to have a GPU that consumes 300+ watts. With the prices here in Europe that's not affordable at all. Also the 4070 with DLSS it gives a really good performance.

You can lower the voltage to 250 watts and still outperform the 4070 easily. With those GPUs, you won’t even need FSR (DLSS) to match the 4070’s performance.

It's alright, though the main reason for writing this isn't what I initially aimed for.

You're suggesting a CPU upgrade to keep up with modern gaming standards. The 4070 is indeed quite outdated now.

Still not what I expected... comparing a GPU released just a few months ago to something outdated feels like calling it a day. It's just as foolish as saying an old architecture GPU with bad drivers gets replaced by Windows and consumes over 300 watts. Sure, it might be better now, but that’s normal with every new generation hitting the market. This has always been my view and what I’ve personally felt. So yes, I’m satisfied with my 4070 and don’t see the need to upgrade to a 6950 for 2K gaming. If you disagree, fine, but stop arguing when it doesn’t match what you’re after. Thanks.

At 2K the 3700X may start to limit performance in CPU-heavy titles, similar to CP2077 or TWW3. While I'm running a 5900X with a 7900XTX at 2K Ultra Wide, it approaches CPU bottlenecking. Your 3700X/4070/2K configuration should work just fine, offering about 20-30% less performance in components and a 30% smaller display. A budget CPU upgrade like the 5800X3D is cheaper, but anything on AM5—even a 7600—comes with higher costs.

You're referring to the performance gap between components. The bottleneck is around 5-10%, which explains why your CPU usage stays low even when the GPU is at full capacity. This suggests a need for a CPU upgrade. Your note about the bottleneck difference being correct is accurate.
